A Worked Example
The formulae are easier to trust once seen with numbers in them. Take a vial containing 10 mg of lyophilised material, into which 2 mL of diluent is introduced. Concentration is total mass divided by total volume, so the result is 5 mg per mL. To obtain 0.5 mg from that solution, volume is target mass divided by concentration: 0.5 divided by 5, or 0.1 mL.
